Fruit ice is the new gelato

Tuesday led to minimal communications or updates from the hospital staff. His doctors wanted to do a liver biopsy as well as a colon biopsy. Due to some coordination of care issues, none of this happened. Because it was anticipated on Tuesday, they were not allowing him to eat. Now, because it was scheduled for Wednesday, he could not eat until the procedures were complete on Wednesday. (Note, his last meal was Monday afternoon). With his limited options for sustenance, Phillip developed an interest in hospital fruit ice to carry him through.

The "orange" hospital fruit ice arrives with the ambition of actual fruit but delivers what can only be described as frozen Tang's distant cousin, a flavor so artificially bright yet simultaneously bland that it somehow makes your taste buds both nostalgic and confused. It's the culinary equivalent of a participation trophy: technically ice cream adjacent, but fooling absolutely no one.

Thankfully, this ice had no similar properties to the ice Phillip consumed in Cabo years ago. But maybe if it did, it would have better prepared him for his colonoscopy.

On May 12, 2025, Phillip went to the ER for abdominal pain. A CT scan revealed a colorectal mass and legions throughout his liver.  He has ultimately been diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer with metastasis to his liver and peritoneum.
